About the job

Where We Come From

GrowthLab was founded with a simple idea: growing businesses shouldn’t have to piece together a bookkeeper, tax preparer, and financial advisor and hope everyone is looking at the same picture. Today, our fully remote team of 25+ professionals has supported more than 1,000 startups and growing businesses with integrated accounting, tax, FP&A, CFO strategy, and HR services.

We’re also rethinking what an accounting firm can look like. Rather than building around high-volume work and long hours, we use technology, automation, and thoughtful processes to handle routine work more efficiently, giving our team time for the judgment, strategy, and relationships we most value. Our sister company, STRMS, develops AI automation, so this isn’t a future-state idea; these tools are already becoming part of how we work.

We believe great client service and a genuinely sustainable work-life balance should be able to coexist. We tell customers "Your success is our success," and we feel the same way about our team.

Not Your Typical Tax Job
For this position we’re seeking an experienced Tax Supervisor/Manager to lead our practice with technical expertise, strong judgment, and a genuine appetite for building what comes next. You’re an accomplished tax professional with 7+ years of hands-on prep and review experience across individual and business returns, including complex multi-state filings. You’re as comfortable leading a small team and managing workflow, as you are advising our clients directly. You bring the operational discipline to oversee 250 annual returns while keeping deadlines, capacity, and quality firmly on track.

GrowthLab is an AI-first firm, and you’ll help lead the implementation of new tax technology and identify opportunities to automate without compromising accuracy or judgment. You don’t need to be an AI expert - just someone who jumps in, learns quickly, tests thoughtfully, and turns new possibilities into practical improvements for your team and clients.

If you’re curious, adaptable, energized by better ways of working, and excited about AI, we look forward to meeting you.

What You'll Do

  • Review returns and make the final call before they go out
  • Own the tax calendar: deadlines, extensions, capacity and assignments
  • Find where AI and automation can take prep, data gathering and follow-up off the team's plate, and build that into how we work
  • Coach the tax team to move from preparing returns to reviewing and advising
  • Give founders year-round planning on entity structure, multi-state and nexus questions, and founder and investor tax issues
  • Be a trusted voice for our customers, not just the person who files their return
  • Work closely with our accounting team, because clean books make on-time returns possible

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of hands-on tax preparation and review experience required
  • A CPA or EA credential. It's a plus, not a requirement.
  • Strong working knowledge of 1040, 1065, 1120 and 1120-S returns
  • Multi-state experience, including apportionment and nexus
  • Experience leading or mentoring others, whether it was in your title or not
  • The ability to explain a tax issue to a founder in plain English
  • Comfort with cloud tools (we use CCH Axcess, QuickBooks Online and Karbon)
  • Real curiosity about AI. You don't need to be technical, but you want to use these tools, and you’re skeptical enough to check their work.
  • A home environment that supports focused remote work

What We Give

  • Compensation: $110,000 to $135,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Insurance: Company-subsidized medical and dental
  • PTO: 2 weeks
  • Retirement: 401(k) with 4% match
  • Holidays: 10 paid, plus the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day
  • Professional Development: approved conferences, CE and certifications may be covered in full or in part. Required training is paid time.
  • Flexibility: The ability to set schedules that run earlier or later than regular business hours, as well as flexing for appointments, school drop-off or pick-up, etc.
  • Flattening the Curve: We proactively schedule tax filings to balance workloads throughout tax season, minimizing overtime and deadline-driven crunches.

Why You'll Like It Here

  • Fully remote, wherever you do your best work
  • A tax season you can plan your life around
  • More time on judgment and advice, less on data entry
  • A chance to help shape what a modern tax practice looks like
  • A team that's curious, takes ownership and looks out for each other

We may not be the highest bidder in the market. What we offer is a practice built so that planning and good tools replace overtime.
